Introduction
 
Reading School is a selective boys' grammar school with Foundation status. The school caters for day boys and weekly boarders alike and being within the state-maintained sector, all the education provided is free.
 
All students must be entitled to hold a full British passport or to have the right of residence in the United Kingdom. Boarders pay only for their board and lodging. Reading School has a designated area for day place applications. Please refer to Further Information or contact the Admissions Office.
 
Reading School has high academic standards, performing consistently well at all levels. In addition, music, sport and drama flourish. Rugby and cricket have strong fixture lists and most of the other sports are played to a high standard.

11+ examinations for entry as a day boy to Reading School in September 2011
 
 For entry in September 2011, a boy's date of birth will fall on or between 1.9.99 and 31.8.00. All applications for day places should be made to Reading School and to the Local Authority. Applications will only be accepted for day or boarding and not for both.
 
Places available
 
There are 112 places in total comprising of 12 boarders (maximum) and 100 day-boys (minimum). Parents should appreciate that not all boys who are deemed suitable for a place at Reading School can be accommodated, as there are many more applications than places available.

Date set aside for the tests : Friday 19th November 2010

Nature of tests
 
There will be three tests each of length approximately one hour.
The tests will cover:
* Reasoning [verbal and/or non-verbal(abstract)]
* English
* Mathematics
The tests will build on current good practice adopted in primary schools and will be tests for which no additional preparation is necessary.
No past papers are available and no further information with respect to the tests will be given. Results for day places will be issued by the L.A. on 1st March 2011.

 For entry in September 2011, a boy's date of birth will fall on or between 1.9.99 and 31.8.00. All applications should be made to Reading School and to the Local Authority for parents who reside in England. For parents who reside outside England, applications should be made to Reading School only. Applications will only be accepted for day or boarding and not for both.
 
Places available
 
There is a maximum of 12 boarding places available at 11+ entry. Parents should appreciate that not all boys who are deemed suitable for a place at Reading School can be accommodated, as there are many more applications than places available.

Thursday 6th January 2011
(Tests are taken at Reading School.)
Closing date for applications
To Reading School by Tuesday 4th January 2011
However parents who reside in England must complete a Common Application Form and return it to their Local Authority no later than 31st October 2010.

All applications for places should be made to Reading School and to the Local Authority. Results will be issued by the L.A. on 1st February 2011.
 
Closing date for applications for both boarding and day places Wednesday 5th January 2011.
Applications will only be accepted for day or boarding and not for both.
 
Date set aside for tests for both boarding and day places:
 
Friday 7th January 2011.
Tests are taken at Reading School.
 
Nature of the tests
 
There will be three written tests each of approximately one hour duration.
The tests will cover:
• Mathematics
• English
• Science
 
Papers will be of an appropriate level of difficulty and will be related to National Curriculum levels of performance (levels 5-7).
The content of the tests in Science will cover Biology, Chemistry and Physics and the style of this paper will be such that we are attempting to test potential. No past papers are available and no further information with regard to these tests will be given.
 
 
 

 
16+ entry to Reading School
 
Applications for entry into the Sixth Form should be made in the September preceding entry.
 
For entry into the Sixth Form boys must have achieved the equivalent of a total of at least 50 points from 8 GCSE subjects (where A*=8, A=7, B=6 etc) and at least a grade C at GCSE in Mathematics and English Language. In addition, it is expected that prospective entrants will have obtained a grade B, or better, in the subjects to be studied in the Sixth Form. Two exceptions to this are that an A grade is required for studying Mathematics and for a student who wishes to study Biology, Chemistry and/or Physics and has not studied separate sciences, then A grades are required in both Science and Additional Science.

All day places will be offered to applicants who perform well enough in the tests and who reside within the designated area. Only if there are further places available will candidates who live outside the designated area be considered.

Open Days
 
Please note, 30th September is our main Open Day and parents are encouraged to attend at this time if possible. 1st July is an alternative opportunity for those unable to attend the September date and will include a more informal view of the School. Both parents and boys are welcome to attend, however it would be very much appreciated if younger children did not accompany parents.
No appointment is necessary. No parking available on site. Nearest public car parks are Queens Road and Royal Berkshire Hospital.
